The event demonstrates how simple actions can make the world of difference if everyone takes part. And it sent a powerful message that we care about the future of the planet. Earth Hour aims to reduce carbon emissions for an hour to the equivalent of taking 480,000 cars off the road. ******Join the World as it combats Global Warming! Following Sydney's lead, 13 cities around the world have already signed up to turn off their lights for an hour on Saturday March 29 next year. Sydney will be joined by Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra. In North America, Chicago and Canada's biggest city Toronto have signed up to participate. Manila in the Philippines, Tel Aviv in Israel and Suva in Fiji have joined Earth Hour, along with the four largest cities in Denmark: Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg. "This is a powerful symbol for everyday people and their concern for climate change," The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, said. "We are seeing a growing awareness and a growing demand for action on climate change from the general public. This is something everyone can take part in." Greg Bourne, the chief executive officer of World Wildlife Fund Australia, which conceived the Earth Hour concept about 18 months ago, said the new international focus was just the beginning fo a bigger campaign. "At 7.29pm on March 31st this year my fingers were crossed, but then 2.2 million people embraced the idea and turned out the lights.
