Jaryth smiled at me today. It was like a bolt out of the blue. Before today, he would smile but it was at random. Then this morning he smiled while I was changing him. I smiled back and his smile got bigger. Wow! It's amazing how much a small smile can affect your feelings. It was like the sun co...

Mark and I bought a GTS Vespa scooter today. WOO! It's really fun to ride, but I am glad that I took the motorcycle training class. So if you see someone driving a fire-engine red Vespa scooter with a green flame helmet, and olive green jacket that's probably me. And even if it's not me, drive ni...

I started jump lessons with Laura this week, and I was nervous. Not because of Laura, but because I hadn't jumped in over 2 weeks, and I was sure that Rambler was going to be, um, fun. He was fast - but I'm not 100% convinced it's because he was actually going that fast as because Sarah and Jac...

Today I started my new life as a full time writer. I already have a book deal, which is nice, and I still have my job at About.com, so I'm not a starving in a garret type of writer. It's fun, but I hope you'll buy my books. :-)

Moving to a new house requires getting a new pet, and so I got a Border Collie puppy. I'm still not 100% sure what I was thinking, but McKinley was so cute, and I knew that I wanted a Border Collie. Shasta was not at all jealous (I was surprised), and in fact acted as a good stable role-model for...

We moved to the Seattle region, and Mark had promised me that when we bought a house (not a condo) that I could get a dog. So within 2 weeks, we went to the pound, and I found Shasta - he was an 8-week-old lab/sharpei mix puppy and the cutest thing on the planet. I learned quickly that puppies ar...

The English teachers in Uzbekistan 1 were supposed to remain in country for two and a half years - 3-6 months longer than the typical Peace Corps service. But in late November 1994, the Peace Corps staff decided that our group was too disruptive, and decided to offer us an early exit with no pena...

I honestly don't remember when we went to Hermosillo Mexico, but it was some time in the spring of 1986, because I didn't take Spanish my senior year of High School.
I was in class with my brother Brendan and our mutual friend Kevito. Kevito went on to become a Spanish teacher himself, so I w...
