EDIT: It also goes without saying that this is a come one, come all style event. We are going for a 'Carnival by word of mouth' style situation and that needs people to spread the word! So whether you are attending or not, please pass this on to everyone you know on Facebook or in real life! OK, to bring everyone up to speed: the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) are preparing to turn on the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest particle accelerator (basically an atom smasher). The collider itself is enormous, a 27 km underground tube that lies under the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. The upshot of this is that there is a chance that this experiment could destroy the world. Microscopic black holes, stanglets, vacuum bubbles, magnetic monopoles and cosmic rays – supposedly it’s perfectly safe but there’s still a chance that when the LHC goes live on the 10 September, the world will end. This is even more of a concern once the first high-energy collisions take place, which is planned for after the LHC is officially unveiled, on 21 October, 2008 (which may result in a follow up party.) So, in the grand old tradition of dancing while Rome burns, David Aland, Lucinda Wallbank and myself, Lachlan Hibbert-Wells, thought it would be a good idea to get together and farewell this thing we call reality. What better time to say what needs to be said, to kiss who needs to be kissed, or to drink what needs to be drunk, than when we stand on the brink of collapsing into a singularity entirely of our own making? Bring food, drink, a picnic, music to blast (perhaps Road To Nowhere?), loved ones to hug as the earth crumbles and whatever else you want close at the end. So please join us near the water in Bicentennial Park in Glebe on Wednesday, the 10 September. The LHC goes live at 9 AM, Switzerland time, which is 5 PM here, but I expect most people will turn up around 6:30 onwards due to work. See you there!
