My First Business

I started my first profitable business in the 4th grade. I remember my teacher was Mrs. Morgan. She was rather avant-garde. Anyhow, I learned with the proper marketing and salesmanship one could sell damn near anything. I mixed high-gluten flour, water, food coloring, and different spices together for flavoring and sold Edible Glue Gunk (or as I called it: EGG) to children in my elementary school, Burnett. I enjoyed success initially, but decided to 'open source' my recipe. Sales suffered after that. I guess I was into open source and free knowledge even back then. I suppose many sales were attributable to the popularity of that slime stuff they call Gak. Mine was edible man! Perhaps I should have gone into chemical engineering rather than computer science.

Mill City Museum

My dad and Sally came into town ealier in the week. On the flight up they read about the Mill City Museum and suggested we stop by. Great suggestion. It gave me a chance to visit the new Guthrie Theater too. The museum was alright. It was interesting to learn the significance and history of St. Anthony Falls. What was really great was the observation point and finally seeing the interior of the new Guthrie. Ashby seemed to really enjoy herself too.

Minnesota Historical Society

Tara, Ashby and I visited the Minnesota Historical Society today. It was really nice. Ashby really enjoyed being outside of the museum with a view of the state capitol, cathedral, and downtown. They had this wonderful exhibit titled: Open House: If These Walls Could Talk, which features a house there in St. Paul that was built in 1888 and has had 50 families reside in it. It was super cool! The first family was a German family, then Italians, then a mix, and now it's inhabited by Hmong families. Quite a story.

Ashby's First Sign

Ashby signed dog. Her first sign. She patted her leg to sign dog while at her grandparents house (Tommy and Brenda) when she saw ChaChi, their Yorkshire Terrier. I was in San Diego at the time for MindTouch and missed it, but Tara called me and told me the news.

MindTouch has had some incredible press in TechCrunch, Wired, NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Information Week, and more. What makes this article so great is the . One of my typical "two thumbs up" shots with a huge shit-eating-grin. Hysterically funny; especially for the front page of the business section!

Moved back to Minnesota

After living for years in Chapel Hill, North Carolina Tara and I return to Minnesota, which is where we met many years earlier. We moved to Maplewood, Minnesota and lived there for the next year. I began work on MindTouch seriously at this point and was working out of the basement of a little townhouse in a dubious neighborhood. My office space had no windows. This made for interesting meetings with contractors.

Ashby Is Born

Tara gave birth to our first child, Ashby Julia, at 10:56 PM CST at Saint Paul Children's Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. She weighed 8 lbs 3.75 oz and was 21 inches long.

Child birthing is a bizarre and strangely beautiful thing. Ashby popped out looking like a canned peach that had been pressed up to the side of a corrugated aluminum can for years. Now she is a beautiful mini-me.

Fell in Love

While being interviewed for a job a lovely young lady approached me, yes during the interview, and introduced herself as Tara Boone. We shook hands. She smiled coyly. A week later when she saw me again and demanded we go out that night. Tara Candace Boone would later become my wife.

Aaron Roe Fulkerson was born July 25, 1975 at Orange County General Hospital in Orange County California to the parents of Roeann and Edward Green.

Ed Green was, at the time, a Marine and Roeann...well, I'm not sure what she was doing. I know she was twenty years old though and I was her third and last child. Her first was Julia Marie and the second was Eric Daniell.
