Nasty Dog Bite  − 6 June, 1981

I had a friend named Kurt who lived in the same development as me when my parents and I lived in Wrightsville, Pa. Don't ask me how I know his name, it just came to me.

A bunch of kids were playing at Kurt's house. He was one of those kids that had everything and never played with any of it. All the other kids wanted what he had and swore that if we had the same toys, we'd play with it all. It was our first foray into the whole, "You don't appreciate what you have until it's gone" thing.

Kurt had a little dog in a doghouse out back. It was pretty cute dog, but everyone would talk about how scary and mean he was. Seeing as how I loved dogs and hadn't met a mean one, I thought it was just how people approached him. We used to play just outside the reach of this dog and we were fine.

One time, we lost a ball and it stayed within this dog's "dirt circle." I said that I'd get it. I did the neccessary, "Good doggy" in a high pitched voice and I began walking to the ball. I bent down to get it and this dog got up from a sleeping doggie laying on its' side to salivating demon running at my arm in about .014 seconds.

I literally couldn't move. The dog grabbed my arm and immediately ripped my skin and was tugging it with it's tooth, as it's tooth was stuck. I was screaming and so were the other kids and Kurt's parents came out and got the dog away. His mom called my mom and my dad appearred about 2 minutes later (It was a 5 minute walk so he must have been running). He carried me home and we went to the doctor and I got stitched up. That was the day I learned that not all dogs are good. :)

I don't know if this is related, but a few months later, I kicked Kurt in the balls and he got a hernia. I think we were just playing, but I'm not sure if I was subconciously angry at him. I shouldn't have been though, it wasn't his fault. You can still see the scar pretty prominently (see picture). It's an upside down "U" and when it was freshly open, it was like a doorway into my inner muscles and veins. Yuck!

Nice, nothing like an old wound for a good spot of tale telling.
