Moved to the Badger State  − 28 May, 2005

Moving from the outskirts of New York City to smalltown Wisconsin was a big adjustment. I did it this weekend after a few months of haggling with my bosses at work.

Chris and I had been visiting each other for a year and it was getting tiring. All the air travel was taking a toll on us but we ended up raking up tons of frequent flyer miles.

Around April 2nd (I waited till April Fools passed), I submitted a proposal that suggested that I could work from Appleton, Wisconsin for the company on a permanent basis. Well, After a month of, "I don't know" and "I don't want to start a landslide of people doing the same thing" they agreed to a temporary agreement. The agreement was to go to August 31, 2005 then they would reevaluate.

I packed up my things and got an ABF moving truck. I loaded it Thursday and Friday with the help of my bro Brian and a buddy from work, and on Saturday morning the truck drove off on it's way. By that afternoon, I was on my way to Newark airport.

I arrived on Saturday evening with laptop in tow. It was all I really needed to connect to the office. I spent my first weekend in Wisconsin with Chris. I couldn't believe I did it. I was in a strange place but I felt completely at home. Funny story, I actually paid for a round trip because it was actually cheaper, almost $100 cheaper, and I never planned on using it.

That Monday, I started work, it was tough at first but I got the hang of it and was plugging away. On Tuesday, the ABF truck arrived, a day early. I unloaded it Tuesday night and Wednesday and I officially had everything cluttered in Chris' house. It was then that she realized how much crap I had. :)

I remember the first time the kids saw my TV and my DVD collection. They said they loved me from that moment on. lol

In August, my boss asked if I wanted to extend another month, I accepted.
In September, my boss asked if I wanted to extend another month, I accepted.
In October, my boss asked if I wanted to extend through December, I accepted.
In December, my boss asked if I wanted to extend through December 2006, I accepted.
UPDATE: It's December 2006 and I've been extended through December 2007, I accepted and here I

I did what I set out to do: I made the decision to drop me tough for my supervisors. At this point I can foresee another extension at least, if not a change to permanent status.

I've been back to the East Coast 3 times this year, twice with Chris and once with the entire family when we drove to Mom and Dad's for Thanksgiving. I love visiting, but now Wisconsin is my home. I wouldn't want it any other way.
