Devon does battle with a chair  − 22 August, 2004

and loses..

I was talking to Chris on the phone when she got another call. She came back after about 5 minutes and was frantic. Devon had been at his dad's for the week and he was playing with some "friends" a block away. There was a troublemaker there and he thought it would be fun to throw a chair off the deck of his house. This flying chair happened to hit Devon in the face.

She went to the hospital and I told her to call me when she knew more and I pleaded with her to calm down, to no avail of course, she's a mom. Devon turned out to be ok, except for a major slice of stitches on his left cheek, inside and out. The chair actually went all the way through his facial muscles and they needed to reconstruct his face. Later, we found out what happened:

His brother Deryck said the troublemaker yelled, "Bomb's away!" and Devon looked up, to see this chair coming right for his face. He also said that Devon didn't cry at first, but when he saw blood on his hands he freaked out. Devon was miserable for the next 2 weeks, as you can see from the picture, and he thought he was ugly and that he'd have the scar forever. I talked to him on the phone and told him that he should come up with a cool story for the scar and I said, "Chicks dig scars buddy, it'll be fine." He laughed. Chris asked me what I said to him and she then laughed too.

She was worried that he really would be disfigured the rest of his life. But, if you see other pictures of Devon in my Dandelife, you'll see that it's hardly noticable now. Chris wanted to sue the parents of this kid in her anger but the kid had been in and out of troubled kids homes and stuff and had been sued so many times, they had nothing left to be sued for.

Needless to say, the boys stay away from the house now. Boys will be boys I guess, and you only hope you can fix the pain with stitches or ice cream.
