"Are You From Indiana?"  − 1 April, 1988

Nito, Black, and I had gone on a trip to Knott's Berry Farm with Kolb Jr. High school.  I can't remember exactly why the trip was planned, but we were there none-the-less.  At the time my dad had just gotten back from Indiana to watch the Indianapolis 500.  Of course, he managed to bring back a shirt for me with the "Indy 500" plastered on the front.  I was not much of a fan of the Indy 500, in fact I may not have even watched it that year, but it was a new shirt and I wore it.

As the three of us were walking through the theme park, this beautiful girl walks up to me places her hand on my chest and says "Are you from Indiana?"  I searched for the right words and came up with the perfect response.  "No", I said without even stopping my stride.  "Have you ever been to Indiana?" she said.  "No" I cleverly replied again as I continue walking.  Finally she said "are you a fan of the Indy 500?  I'm from Indiana".  "Nope" I replied as she stopped in her tracks and I walked away.

I got about 20 feet and realized that I had just given my audition for Dumb and Dummer.  That girl was cute and did everything she could to talk to me.  What was I thinking?  I turned around and she was gone.  For the next 3 hours I wanted to kill myself for being such a dork. I tried to get it out of my mind.

As the boys were making fun of me, we came across this large crowd that was standing in front of a stage.  We squeezed into the crowd to see what was going on.  "Oh, it's a gymnastics performance" I said.  "hmm it's the Indiana State Champion Gymnastics team..."  as the words were coming out of my mouth, she appeared.  The girl that was talking to me was part of the Indiana State Gymnastics team.  I just about died.

I waited for an hour after the show at a back dressing room door, but she never came out.  That was my one chance with a gymnast and blew it.  Live and learn.

Oh, the humanity. I seem to remember her asking you "Then why are you wearing that shirt?" The next few seconds elapsed in slow motion. You turned to face her as she passed, then started walking away from her backwards. I died a thousand deaths as you shrugged your shoulders and the words "I dunno" came out of your mouth. You're right, I do remember that. I'm glad that you are here to keep me honest.
