Engaged  − 9 October, 1994

Steve proposed to me this day. I often share this date with others, but I don't think I've really ever told anyone how he proposed (well, family members, kids...basically anyone who might freak out).

Steve and I had been together for over four months. We had long before this day decided to be exclusive. He had bonded with Brittany and it was a nice fit. I could really see myself having a future with Steve at this point. We hadn't really talked much about a future, though, and I wasn't going to be the one to freak him out.

We had gone to a club with a few friends. We had both had plenty to drink. We got a taxi back to his barracks. We started fooling around and began having sex. Suddenly, Steve stops and asks me to marry him. I, of course, say yes. At that moment, I was very excited (well, duh) and didn't have any hesitation. Afterward, we both fell asleep (and why we thought it was OK for me to fall asleep at his barracks, I don't know). The next morning came and the first thoughts that raced through my head were 1) did Steve really propose?, 2) does he even remember? and 3) did he mean it? Given the circumstances, I could see how that proposition would get stuck out there without meaning it. I had to gently find a way to find out my answers. Fortunately, Steve solved that problem by asking if I remembered the night before and the details. He was scared I had said yes because of the moment. After having an actual real conversation, we were engaged. : )
