Hope − 12 September, 2001
My housemate and I were both Peace Corps Volunteers in Africa. We lived in a tiny, dusty apartment on Beakes St. And tonight we filled it with thoughts of hope.
America would come together, we thought.
Everyone would stop obsessing about celebrity and popular culture and commit themselves to things that matter, we thought.
Our country would reach out to the people of the world with unprecedented goodwill and resources, we thought.
Americans would prove the strength of democracy and freedom to the world by becoming everything that we always wanted to be.
We thought.
