my first *real* job  − 1 November, 1987

i worked for a firm at the chicago board of trade, i was being groomed to become an investment banker. after two and a half weeks i knew investment banking wasn't my cup of tea. so i gave my boss a two week notice. he was *shocked*. all he said in disbelief was, *do you know how much money you're walking away from!! do you realize how many people your age would *kill* to have this opportunity!* i replied, *yes, i do. i appreciate this opportunity but you should find someone who is more worthy than i am. investment banking just isn't in my heart.*

*post-script: i forgot to mention that my boss was a very attractive, young, ridiculously successful, 27 year old veep of the firm. he owned a farm, a penthouse and lived in a huge mansion in the suburbs and was selling his used mercedes for $85k. however, all he talked about was how he missed working with his dad, a contractor by trade. my boss would work on mini, unpermitted, remodeling projects in the office and get fined thousands of dollars by the cbot. one day he tried to fix some electrical wiring and he proceeded to put a live wire into his mouth. his body jolted back and fell to the ground. i bursted out laughing. after that i developed an enormous *crush* on him. i told him to retire from investment banking and so he can go work for his dad again. i wonder if he ever did...

post-post-script: another thing i remember is they gave away a *gold* rolex each month. everyone in the office had a *gold* rolex or two. i don't like *gold* rolexes and this gave me another excuse to leave. :-P
