first f1 race  − 28 September, 2003

nwormie and i went to our very first f1 race in indianapolis. i had flown in for the weekend from california, met nwormie in chicago and drove to indianapolis i remember buying earplugs at the drugstore and the pharmacist knew right away that i was on my way to the race.

when we got the to the indianapolis motor speedway i was amazed at the sea of colorful flags from around the world. the crowd was very international in flavor. definitely not your typical indy 500 or nascar crowd. europeans, south americans, asians, flooded the stadium and i listened to people speak in german, french, chinese, hindi, spanish and portugese. for a second i forgot i was in indianapolis.

the high pitched whine of these exquistly engineered super-duper-ultra high performance driving machines was unforgettable. i remember watching michael schumacher in his ferrari making turns at 200 mph. then it started to rain and then hail. for a second i thought they were going to postpone the race but they continued. kimi raikkonen was driving impressively despite the poor conditions and schumie really pushed the pedal to the metal. he raced fearlessly around the slick speedway and in the end really pushed the other drivers to the edge. i even saw a spin-out which rarely happens in f1 between barichello and montoya. although i wore my red schumacher ferrari cap i was secretly rooting for kimi raikkonen. however, in the end it was schumacher all the way. although kimi raced a very respectable second. schumie won his 6th formula one title that year.
