Doom − 21 November, 2006

Marja and I hiked the "Tongariro Crossing," a 17km trek up, down, and through a large swath of Tongariro National Park on the north island of New Zealand. It's a fantastic tramping experience and is one of New Zealand's "Great Walks".

If some of these barren, rocky landscapes look familiar, it's because parts of this location were used in the filming of The Lord of the Rings. The terrain makes up a large part of the Plains of Gorgoroth in Mordor and Mount Ngauruhoe itself was featured as "Mount Doom" in the movies.

Beautiful. New Zealand is definitely one of my top-5 destinations. Never been. But I will no doubt relish my time there. We need maps here on Dandelife, don't we?

Or perhaps geo-tagging on a general/non-detailed map, a la Flickr... the ability to tie your diaries to photos, videos, *and* maps -- what more could you ask for? Smells? ;)

Indeed. What more *could* you ask for? :-) Can you show me an example of Flickr using geotags? I've yet to see it in action.

Here's a bunch of NZ photos that have been geotagged on Flickr. You can zoom in on the map, click one of the dots, and see which photos have been "placed" there by users. I tended to place mine in general locations (Yahoo!Maps doesn't have good detail on NZ and Australia just yet), but I imagine that, on a well-mapped area, you could get quite specific (streets, longitude, lattitude, etc.).

Very cool. I know that flickr had turned on that feature some months ago, but it wasn't apparent to me how to use it until now. Thanks for sharing. I really like their maps interface too. I don't think there's much I can do to improve on it. Hmmm. Food for though. Thanks for sharing.
