I'm a Lonely Only − 25 July, 1981
On this day I became an only child. I really did miss having a sibling. Thankfully I didn't turn to drugs in the third grade or anything, but it did miss my sibling. It is kind of weird to me that there is no one else in the world that has the same grandparents, and parents as me. There is no one that can truly understand where I have been and what I have seen.
I understand that some only's really enjoy being the only one. Not me. Most people don't guess that I am an only when they meet me and I like that.
I did fill the void in my life for socialization by becoming best friends with the neighbor up the street Laura. Laura would become as close as a sister, and her family was a family family for me. Most of my childhood memories involve Laura.

Emily,
I can certainly relate! I'm an "only" myself. Took a while, but finally broke out of the quiet/shy mold in college. I guess I fall into the "enjoy being only" category. There is a great book, "A Party of One", that speaks to folks who are content with their own company, as many onlies are. Great post!

I love the ads on this page. "Homeless children" "Hope for parents" and "Child out of Control?" are a few headlines showing up on the side there. Adwords don't always get it right, do they? :-)

Thanks Scott, I always love the company of other "onlys" makes me feel rather less lonely. Your right, K - the adds are rather bleak!! Yowser.

My friend Samantha pointed out that most of the ads for my vanity page were geared toward gay singles. I didn't get it.

Maybe they meant "happy singles"?

I would have believed that about forty years ago :p

Yeah, I gotta say that the Google Ads attached to some stories are hilarious! A lot of them on my stories are about alcohol counseling. Subtle. Real subtle.

I'm a half only, and my little brother is a half-only. I was 11 when he came along, and he was in grade school when I left for college.
