the 2002 chicago nood was my very first time racing in a major regatta. i was crewing on *boondoggle* a j24. we met at the chicago yacht club bright and early. it was sunny and super windy -- 25+ knots. sailboats were capsizing, masts were snapped in half. our skipper was swearing up a storm. we broached and almost lost our mast. i remained calm. i was in the cockpit. my arms were about to fall off. i was the only girl and lightest person on the boat. when we broached i thought our boat was going to capsize. i almost fell into the lake michigan sans an inflatable vest. then one of my crew members grabbed my arm at the last minute and saved me.
i was covered in scrapes and bruises all over. my fingers bled. my legs bled. but i didn't complain because i wanted to be one of the guys. the race was a complete adrenaline rush but by the end
of the weekend. i could barely crawl out of bed. it was a physical, mental and emotional test of my will and endurance. i was glad when it was over.
i believe we came in 5th place.
