World Wide Web released  − 1 January, 1991

Because there was so much growth during the early Nineties, I have highlighted some important milestones in each individual year.

World-Wide Web (WWW) released by CERN; Tim Berners-Lee developer (:pb1:). First Web server is nxoc01.cern.ch, launched in Nov 1990 and later renamed info.cern.ch.

Other Steps In Technology

- The Gopher Internet navigation system is released by researchers at the University of Minnesota. Gopher inventor Mark MaCahill is reported to have called it "the first Internet application my mom can use."

- An early Internet search program called WAIS is introduced. WAIS (Wide-Area Information Server) was originally started as a project by Dow Jones, Apple, and the Thinking Machines Corporation. 

- The Windows 3.0 operating system is released by  Tim Berners-Lee and CERN release the World Wide Web program. CERN originally developed the Web for physics researchers.

Other Steps In Virtual Learning Environments 

- The history page of the TEDS company states that they developed the first Learning Management System.

- Sydney, Australia, based Webster & Associates release first of several graphical course based systems with Learning Management System included. Courses include logins, course structure, recording of results, reporting, etc. Included ability to store and retrieve results remotely. This system could and was run as a client-server application.

- A collaboration of faith based groups http://www.ecunet.org start using a product called BizLink (which later became Convene) in teaching their missionaries and staff around the world using the internet.
