return of a student  − 31 January, 2007

Freelancing once again and back to school, the Spring 2007 semester at CSULB. If you are there on Monday's or Tuesday's at night, be sure to say "suuuppppp". Its funny, I have only been gone a year, but I feel much older, and don't recognize half the crowd that is there. Everyone, but myself of course, has an ipod on, even while they are walking into class. Apparently, some of them don't know how loud they really are either, as I can hear them across the road.

I see alot of the younger generation that looks like they are fresh out of high school, and I think back to when I looked like them, holy crap.

I take things a bit slower, and am more interested in philosophy at the moment then design or computer science. I am not happy with the design program there, even though I didn't apply for the BFA program, I am a second away from my BA with an emphasis. However, as I said, I don't agree with some of the design tactics and teachers egos that seem to get in the way. There are a handful of wonderful instructors there though however, a few of them are Angela Glenn and Justin Hooper, listen to these types of people well. They will show you how to solve a design problem much better than just adding a drop shadow to a logo.

Philosophy has been wonderful so far, and I am excited. This semester I am looking into see if I want to continue in design, or switch over to philosophy. I know a lot of people think I should just graduate, but graduating to me, doesn't mean as much as inheriting all the material of the subject matter that a major presents. I like interesting and well informed content. Not content that is simply regurgetated so you can work at the local design manufacturing plant. Philosphy is something I have always had a soft heart for, because I love the thought processes that are invoked, and it only makes me more humorously sarcastic.

I don't get up and run out the door when a class is over. I look at the instructor for the moment to see if I have any questions, and leave slowly, because by this time all the younger people have all bolted out of the door so they can get their weekly viewing of American Idol.

So far so good.

Well, American Idol is pretty good. :-) Glad to see you writing again, Anthony. I'm looking forward to some more. If you want my advice, I say finish the degree that you started. You're so close. And honestly, the degree you have only matters a certain degree. The fact that you HAVE a degree is what sets you ahead of the rest. It's a pre-requesite for any decent job - even if the job is not in the field you graduated with.

Isn't funny how quick people look like "kids" I feel like such an old lady now-a-days!

I absolutely agree with you Kelly, and I have been told that a few times by a couple of mentors =) I am taking a break from it this semester though, and its been fun so far. Being freelance also allows me to attend those morning design classes that I would not have been able to if I stayed full time.
