Turning 16 in the Big Apple  − 1 March, 1990

Our parents. What were they thinking? They sent me and Julia on a Greyhound bus to New York City for a week as gifts for our birthdays. We went on spring break. We stayed with Julia's older sister and her boyfriend. I don't remember where we stayed (Julia - can you help with the details, please?) but I do remember being in love with Julia and her sister. Gorgeous. Quirky. Better than Columbus, Ohio. I'm talking about NYC, of course.

Why would our parents conspire to send us to NYC together at such a hormonal age? Did they conspire? I honestly don't remember asking to do this trip. But maybe I did. Maybe we both did.

Details? I can't remember. We slept on the floor of the apartment. No funny business. Julia's sister's boyfriend was a hoot. I remember him totally shattering my perception of The Eagles being one of the all-time best bands. He was making fun of "Hotel California" lyrics and internally I was having an emotional break-down. It was the first time I'd heard anyone take Glen Fry down a notch. It needed doing. I was too willing to accept status quo, which at the time consisted only of what my friends and family had listened to. Music was such a big part of who we were back then. Alas, I digress. What else do I remember about NYC? Washington Square. NYU. Columbia. MOMA. I think we took the bus a great deal of places too. Julia and I had the days to ourselves. Alone. And still, no funny business. I don't even remember it being an option. What was I thinking? :-)
