like father, like son... − 1 September, 1972 - 5 February, 2007

my family moved to the suburbs when i was eight years old. in third grade i started going to a new school. one of the first people i befriended was a girl named laura. during recess i went outside and i noticed a girl atop a jungle gym with a cast on her arm. i asked her what happened and she told me she fell off the jungle gym. i smiled. after that we became instant friends.

later i remember something tragic happened. laura's father got killed in a accident at work. it was quite a horrific accident. i felt really sorry for her and her family. luckily, she had a very strong mother who worked extremely hard to raise her family by herself.

after we graduated fifth grade laura and i also attended the same junior high school. amazingly we still remained friends. laura had an older brother, his name was emery and he was going to college on a football scholarship to the univeristy of colorado at boulder. where he was majoring in communications. she would tell me stories about emery all the time. i would watch him on television playing in the college bowl games. i was a bit jealous and envious.

one day in english class we had a writing assignment. we had to write a biography about about someone we admired and looked up to. i decided that i wanted to write a biography about emery. when i told laura she brought me lots of pictures and newspaper clippings about emery that i was very grateful for, and i included them in emery's biography. also, i used creative license and mentioned that emery had a successful career in the NFL and got a superbowl ring. i ended up getting an *A* on the assignment and gave my biography to laura to give to her brother.

when we got to high school, laura and i were in the same humanities class. by now emery was playing in the NFL with the NY giants. she would give me updates on her brother. whenever i watch a game i would root for emery. he played tight-end. later on he was traded to the denver broncos and finally to the chicago bears.

senior year in high school laura had a party. i was there with chris sanford who i had a crush on. i really don't remember much about the party other than sometime after midnight, laura's brother, emery told us it was getting late and we had to go home. of course we all listened and left quietly.

finally in 1985 the prediction i made in 7th grade came true. the chicago bears had a spectacular season. the bears were finally going to the super bowl XX. on january 26, 1986, at the lousiana superdome, the chicago bears trunced the new england patriots 45-10. emery moorehead got his well-deserved superbowl ring.

now over twenty years later, in an twist of irony, emery's son aaron moorehead, a wide receiver for the indianapolis colts, played against the chicago bears in superbowl XLI. the colts beat the bears. aaron's now following in his father's footsteps continuing the moorehead legacy of superbowl champions in the family.

Very cool. It's funny how stories like this travel. I was learning for the first time yesterday that Emery and Aaron were related. Then I tune into Dandelife today and voila! There's your story about Emery and his family. Talk about synchronicity.

that's what i love about the web and dandelife. it shows that some how through a tenuous digital thread, we are all connected. :-)
