Woop  − 25 April, 2006

It was sometime right around now that I started to cheep "Woop, woop!" whenever I got excited.  As it turns out, this greatly annoyed everyone: Marja, co-workers, friends, etc.  But that only made me say it more often.

It's a sort of amalgamation of exclamations lifted from many sources, but the primary original lies with Poke, a stupid throwaway character in Stephen King's book The Stand.  He's mostly present in the novel for a bit of comic relief as well as to introduce a major character, Lloyd Henreid.

To make a long story short, Poke robs a store with Lloyd, kills a bunch of people with his gun ("The Pokerizer," for those keeping score at home), and gets shot and killed by a stand-in for The Gunslinger (yes, that one).

Sounds like a pretty short, sad life, right?  But Poke has a mess of fun doing it.  And while I don't admire his actions, I do admire the zest and zeal in which he pursues things.

So I say "woop, woop!" from time to time.  Partly in homage to King, yes, but also partly to remember that the pursuit of actions can be just as important as attaining their results.
