The Valley − May, 1994
They were massive things. They stood like ancient castles on every side of us as we climbed from our cramped car. I was to live in one of these giant buildings, and the prospect was as exciting as it was frightening.
The air was sweet that day, sweeter than any I've experienced since, and it carried with it the scent of freshly cut grass. I followed my parents quietly, and just before I was swallowed by the looming brick creature I was to inhabit, I saw her standing there. She eyed me curiously, and slipped me a smile as I disappeared inside.
Her name was Amanda.
