Greatest Road Trip EVER − 14 April, 2004
When I think of all the travel for business I do, there are few trips that stand out in my mind...and then, only if something really good or really bad happened.
Tom, Roi and I all took a road trip together beginning on 04/14/04 that covered many cities, multiple flights, rental cars, and a one nerve racking ride with a Sophie's Pizza delivery woman. Although there looked like a lot of play on the company dime, we saw many customers and shared a room on the road, accounting for thousands of saved dollars in the long run. Here is our schedule as I remember:
WEDNESDAY 04/14/04: SLC -> Chicago
- I read 3/4 of The Davinci Code on the plane. LOVED IT.
- Arrive at Marriott hotel [Michigan Ave]. Eat Dinner at Houston's..
- Finished Davinci Code and handed the book over to Roi.
THURSDAY 04/15/04 [Chicago]
-Breakfast at Greek place.
-Meetings with Littler Mendelson Attorney Firm.
-Chicago White Sox game.
-Dinner at Cheesecake Factory in the John Hancock building.
-Visit Barnes & Noble to review Davinci artwork for reference while discussing book.
FRIDAY 04/16/04 [Chicago]
-Walk 7 billion miles to get to the Original Pancake House, but there is a massive power outage.
-Stop into same Barnes & Noble for Davinci clarification.
-Roi and Tom go to an afternoon Cubs game, while I go to Queensryche sound check at HOB.
-Meet back at hotel and head to dinner at Sullivan's.
-Attend Queensryche Show at the Chicago House of Blues.
(Steve dies and goes to heaven. Roi wonders what the hell he agreed to).
-Sleep for 3 hours back at hotel before wake up call at 4:00 am to catch flight to NYC.
SATURDAY 04/17/04 Chicago -> LaGuardia
-Drive through Manhattan, as Roi has never been there.
-Visited the usual suspect locations: Central Park, Times Square, Gray's Papaya, Ground Zero.
-Continue driving to Albany.
-Check in at Residence Inn.
-Eat dinner at Hooters of Albany [inside a shopping mall?]
-Laughed our guts out at American Wedding, started using the phrase "FYYFFers".
SUNDAY 04/18/04 Albany -> Cooperstown -> Boston
-Baseball Hall of Fame.
(Roi dies and goes to heaven. Steve wonders what the hell he agreed to).
-Tom appeases Steve and they go for a drive while Roi wanders around the HOF.
-It rains like a mutha, but Tom and Steve view the head of the Susquehana river at Otsego Lake.
-Pick up Roi, head to the Boston turnpike.
-Check into the Newton Marriott.
-Eat at the Marriott bar and grille. There is a prom of some sort going on.
- All three of us read books in one room like old farts:
Steve: Angels & Demons
Roi: Davinci Code
Tom: Bible Code II
MONDAY 04/19/04 [Boston]
-Tom and I go to see Whole Foods NE division.
-En route to the meeting, we drop off Roi at Fenway. He hasn't a ticket...its Boston vs. Yankees.
-Roi enter's bar outside fenway, tells his story of life-long fandom, and gets a free ticket to get in.
-Boston wins. It is their miraculous season, after all.
-After the game, Roi reaches over wall and scoops up hallowed Boston dirt from the field.
-Roi is hereafter known as "The Talisman".
-Roi continues The DaVinci Code late into the night...in the bathroom so he won't wake us.
Every 45 minutes, he needs to get out of the tub to turn the timed lights back on. He is addicted.
TUESDAY 04/20/04 Boston -> Conneticut
-Steve and Roi visit Littler Mendelson of Boston, Tom visits Vedior.
-Heading to Conneticut, we eat at Long Horn Steak House in Providence, Rhode Island.
-Checked in to Courtyard in Conneticut.
-For dinner, we went to the Mohegan Sun.
-Got call about the Dobson's auto accident.
-Ate at THE MOST DISMAL BBQ joint on earth inside the Mohegan Sun.
WEDNESDAY 04/21/04 Conneticut ->NYC
-Tom and Roi visit Mohegan Sun Security Department.
-Later, Tom and Roi pick up Steve and head to Foxwoods for a meeting.
-Drive to Jamaica, NY.
-Checked in to Courtyard at JFK.
-Turned in the car, only to realize there was no eating establishments around.
-Sophie's pizza delivery gal offers ride to her pizza joint (after 2 more deliveries with us).
-Pizza gal drives with her knees, smokes with one hand and uses a cell phone in the other.
-We are too young to die.
-Eat at Sophie's. Great pizza and pasta place.
-No car to get back to Courtyard.
-Nigerian car service 1 block down. Scary. Bare office, one light bulb and a cell phone.
-We arrange car...and arrive safely back to Courtyard.
-Room is so small, Tom must sleep on the floor. Not big enough room for a rollaway.
THURSDAY 04/22/04 JFK -> SLC
-Arrive in SLC at 10:30 am MST after an early morning Delta flight .
-Laugh knowing we have golf clubs in our trunks and considered playing a round before we left.
-Home from the airport.
-Sleep.
-Re-live memories forever.
