My first electric bass − 20 August, 2001
One of the most important elements in jazz and blues is the bass line. I had been playing my music with a commercial software program called "Band in a Box." It was okay for sketching out song ideas or practicing standards, but one distinctive feature was that its bass lines were clichéd and boring, especially for jazz.
Finally, I could stand it no longer, and on my birthday (one year after starting back with music) I turned another corner: I began learning a second instrument.
I had my old, rotten guitar from my childhood, and an old, rotten amp from the same era. Turns out, these were only "junk" to me; there are collectors who will buy them. In this case, I traded both of these in for a used bass, a 5-string with absolutely no name. It played fairly well, and this served as my learning instrument.
