You're In the Army Now, Son! − 10 July, 1991
Dan woke up at 5 a.m. and left the house without saying goodbye. At that point, his departure was something he wanted, and the ride to MEPS downtown with his recruiter was completely in silence.
He took my oath. He had lunch at a Subway in Mineapolis's skyway system (footlong spicy Italian), and killed time until his flight left.
Within 24 hours, he was in the stifling heat of Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. His hair was cropped short, and his entire wardrobe was green, brown, and black.
And he was free.
Sort of.

So were you Bill Murray or Harold Ramis? :-)

Hard to say, really. Probably more Harold Ramis. I grew up as an army brat, so I knew enough to not mouth off and to keep my shit together.

Yeah, I think Bill Murray would have had a pizza as his last free meal. Me? I'm partial to the 12-inch veggie sub. It's the cheapest foot-long you can get. And it feels healthy when you don't OD on mayo and oil.
