Bought my first car so I could make out with Kelly  − 24 November, 2001

I had a 1994 (I think) Nissan Maxima that was a graduation gift from my folks. Not to sound ungrateful, but I never liked the thing. Too big and just not my style. It was on the fritz and I was up at my folks for Thanksgiving so my dad took it in to have it looked at. He came back to say that it wasn't looking good. I could have the mechanic fix it but my car wouldn't be ready until later in the week. Well, I HAD to get back to San Diego since Kelly was driving in from Lincoln, NM after spending Thanksgiving with his family. And I had to get to San Diego that night since Kelly was having car problems too and he had to drive straight into San Diego - no stops since his car would die if he turned it off and he couldn't go home, but that's another story.

So I made the decision then and there that I was going to buy a new car. Technically I had been thinking about buying one so it really wasn't that much of a crazy decision but really I'm just trying to validate buying a new car so I could make out with a boy.

It was pouring rain that day and I had decided, just like 1/2 of Americans my age, that I was going to buy a Jetta - the power of marketing. We (me and my parents) went to the local dealership and I found a car that I liked. The guy gave me a price (who smelled like booze by the way) which again, for some crazy reason, I instantly accepted - no help from the folks. I drove home in the pouring rain, got home, Kelly met me, we went to the store, made proscuitto soup, went to bed innocently enough and then I heard...."it's ok if you want to kiss me" Three years and 32 days later we were married.

Took me a while to propose, eh?

You think it was on the fritz then? You should see it now. The driver's side window won't roll down, the air conditioning only works at full blast, and, oh yeah, it will only blow cold because the lever that switches between hot and cold is broken. The odometer no longer works - it's been stuck at 190,000+ miles. And there's no radio. It's a dandy!

I had a maxima once, white with ground effects, an air foil and white custom rims. The girls would go crazy over it. I have a jetta now (must have seen the same commercial). I'm buying whatever car you buy next, so make it a good one.
