September 11 − 11 September, 2001
I used to wake up to "Jeff and Jer" a local radio show in San Diego as my alarm clock. This morning it went off at 6:30 am and there was a commotion on the radio. I instantly bolted in bed, grabbed my remote and turned on the TV. I watched for a while, not quite knowing what to think. I managed to pull myself away, take a shower and get ready for work. I also told my roommate and her boyfriend what had happened since they hadn't heard - seems weird now to think there was once a time in our life that you didn't know about 9/11. I had to be at work at 8:00 so I must have left around 7:30 and I believe the towers had fallen by then.
I just remember being at work and not really knowing what to do - is it business as usual, do I constantly check the news web sites, do I go into the main office and watch the TV they had set up? I remember actually calling a client and leaving a message about their project which I felt like a moron for doing.
Eventually the powers that be called us into the main office and told us to go home and be with our families. I remember arriving home and just watching TV and the news. The sense of dread was unbearable.
