making sushi  − 7 March, 2007

Yesterday Everything Guy and I decided to try and make some sushi. I’ve done it a couple of times before, but never very well. I’d watched a lot of sushi chefs do it, and knew it’d be hard. But I wanted to try. So I read some blogs about making sushi rice, bought some bamboo mats, and other items, and hoped for the best. The first two times turned out edible but not entirely satisfactory results. Last night we did a pretty good job. Things weren’t always perfect - the rice wasn’t quite right; it was hard to get good proportions; some of our rolls ended up a little lopsided. For his first time and my third with no official help though, we were pretty pleased. We used different combinations of unagi, imitation crab, avocado, cukes, and tempura shrimp. We all agreed that the best roll was the one where we just threw everything in. In the end it took us about 2 hours to make 10 rolls, but it was fun and totally satisfying. Next time I think we’ll try more ingredients and learn more about making proper sushi rice.

what sushi blogs did you read? I bought <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Sushi-Emi-Kazuko/dp/1841721050/ref=sr_1_25/002-4764194-9207228?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173980180&sr=8-25">this book</a> a while back - but I'm convinced its instructions for making rice are wrong.
