One doesn't discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of shore for a very long time. - Andre Gide
I packed up all my belongings and headed for San Francisco. I had graduated from UCR and had gotten a job with IBM Global Services. It was, for the most part, my dream job. I was so excited and for one of the few times in my life I was not scared to make this huge change in my life. Not only was I moving away from home, but I was also moving in with my girlfriend "Little OM".
My parents helped me drive the Budget rental truck up Interstate 5. It broke down on the grapevine and we had to wait a couple hours for them to fix it.
My first day at IBM they put me in the basement with 3 other new college hires and there were 2 computers for the 4 of us. They had 386 processors all we could do was access the IBM intranet. It was aweful. A far cry from the limo and pampering I received when I interviewed.
I was with IBM for 4 years and I don't think that I could have been lickier to start my career off with them. Taking the plunge into this unknown was the best thing that I could have done.
