Killing Outlook: Verizon Won't Let Me − 1 January, 2007
What I've determined so far is that true two-way synchronization between my Treo and my Contacts in Yahoo Mail does not exist. I can do a one-time upload if I ever want to totally dump any data I have on my Treo. But one of the really great features on the Treo is how easy they make it to add new numbers to your contacts. Ditto for calendar events. But the syncing process does not allow my Treo to communicate changes back to Yahoo. Why? Because Verizon's stupid Wireless Sync only pulls email from your email account and forwards it to your phone. It won't update your calendar. It won't update your notes and tasks.
That said, Wireless Sync was very easy to set up from my phone. Although the web-based tools it offers are limited, the process of at least getting my email to forward to the phone was a sinch. If I could cut out the middle man and get true two-way synchronization between my phone and yahoo, I would. But, alas, Verizon will not let me.
This is a significant trade-off. If I had stayed just syncing my phone with Outlook I would suffer through duplicate messages (once in my outlook and once in my web-based mail) but I would have true two-way syncing. That is, every contact I add to my Yahoo Mail gets sync'd with Plaxo. Then I let Plaxo handle pushing that data to Outlook. It's a hack, yes. But for the time, it worked. What's more is that by syncing with Outlook in the past, I was able to get new numbers and tasks and calendar entries off of my phone and into my calendaring system. Now that I've killed Outlook, I'm facing the very real possibility that all of the new numbers that I have on my phone are not going to be sync'd ever with my "master" data in Yahoo/Plaxo. I'm pot-committed and it's only January. Thanks a lot Verizon.

1-25-07 - Finally found out how to get to my Wireless Sync page. Hopefully I can edit how information gets updated in the two way sync there. Hopefully.

While I figured out how to manage my push settings at the Wireless Sync site I still have no solution in sight for true two-way syncing.
