An Old Friend Shoots His coworkers − 9 April, 2007
My old friend Tony LaCalametta became a hunted man when he, due to his being laid off from an accounting firm and some apparant mental issues, kills two employees and injures another at his old office today in Troy, Michigan.
It ended in a high speed chase with police and they have captured him. They showed his picture on Headline News and I must say; he hasn't really changed since 1991. I could still see that smiling clean cut nice boy. As a matter of fact, he was smiling in the picture on the news, probably from the accounting firms personnel files.
I've seen video of him in cuffs and he looks like the same nice guy any one of you know right now, I'm sure he's very ashamed.
It really hits home, as Tony was a member of the youth group at a catholic church that my best friend Brian and I set up. We went camping with Tony the weekend before I shipped out to Fort Knox in 1991. I saw him one time after that when I came home on leave.
It also hit me that these shooting suspects that you see plastered all over the news are, at one time, normal as you or I. Tony once considered the seminary and never had a bad word to say about anyone. It really makes you wonder what happens to a person to make them get to the point of carrying a weapon into a public place and start shooting. Especially Tony, this is unreal.
I'm sure we'll know more about his mental state in the coming days, but it makes you wonder; Since I knew Tony, I feel bad about how villified he has been made already by the news conglomerate. Obviously, he's not in the right frame of mind and I'm not, in the slightest, excusing the murder and attempted murder he's committed, it just makes me wonder about all of the crazed suspects of years past and how normal they might have been before they "went postal."
