Dan watches his first professional sporting event -- the USA/USSR hockey match of the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics -- on television. Prior to this, sports were just on the fringes of his awareness.
Growing up in West Berlin, in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, one couldn't help but be aware of the conflict between East and West, even at the young age of five, Dan understood that there were political divisions in the world, and that the people on opposite sides of the division didn't like each other very much.
Sitting at home in Minnesota, in front of the TV, Dan got to see the most improbable of outcomes happen, and ever since has cheered for the underdog and really loved sports.
Oh, and Al Michaels finishing the broadcast with the famous question still gives Dan goosebumps, just thinking about it.
And the movie Miracle? It makes Dan laugh and cry at the same time.
