Self respect: Optional − 13 April, 2007
Sitting on the earth, protected from the damp grass with Samantha's blanket, the scene before me is typical. Teenangsters, emo boys, overweight girls with more eye liner than self esteem, the older people that don't really fit in, and the drinkers of the night. I find myself surrounded by this last group, and it is here that I feel most comfortable. At least these people have no delusions about what it is they do. Bad music pours from the stage. I light another cigarette and wonder when kids today decided that brass instruments were cool.
I mean, I'm all for it. It's just weird.
The event is called Mayhem, and whether or not it lived up to its namesake I can't say. I didn't stay long enough. A concert sponsored by only God knows who, and open to the likes of anyone walking down the street. It looked like Hot Topic was having a special and they couldn't sell those fishnets and band tees fast enough.
I wonder about these people I see parading their poor fashion decisions for all the world. I don't want to get too comfortable on this pedestal, though. The night was probably too unfairly colored by my depression and cynicism for me to give an objective account of the goings on.
Still, you have to question how such bad music can attract so many people. Maybe it wasn't so much the music they were after, as the chance to say I was there, and to lose themselves in a throbbing mass of screaming college students.
Oh, the allure is just too strong.

What were the college students screaming about? Were the bands throwing acid at them? Maybe they have no idea of why they do things a certain way.

In excitement, I'm sure. Though, at one point someone did bring a purple strap on onto stage, cut it open, then through the purple/green goo that poured out of it into the crowd.

Sounds like a GWAR cover band!

I suppose that would explain the styrofoam costumes :-P
