Typhoon Nari  − 14 August, 2001

I remember looking at that computer screen and thinking that this was about the coolest thing that I had seen. Heh. Yea right.

The Typhoon grew up right there above Okinawa. I mean we saw the eye before we ever saw the rest of the thing. Damn, that was some wind... So it grows and gets windier and windier. It's spread from Taiwan to Southern Mainland Japan at this point, and it's actually spinning, and actually knocking things down.

I'm stationed on Okinawa as among other things the Camp Damage Control Officer. Hmm. I think I'm going to have some work to get done. I've got this Gunny that's in teh same boat as I am trouble wise. We've both done things that the Marines don't particularly like, and now we are waiting for them to allow us to leave peacefully. This is where the irony comes in. We got the clean up done. We attacked it, and were done before any of the other camps. Two misfits who had been written off... Heh. Imagine that. I owe her a thank you, I've given it to her, but hell, here's another.

So I got a little ahead of myself there. The winds started to really pick up I went out and had a cigarette. I didn't think that I would be able to but the wind was so hard that there was this vaccume type of thing there on the side of the building. That's when I saw the High Tension tower. You know the kind, they have the big gigantic steel girder construction. 4 lines that carry the power for a whole city on them right? The kind that never move? Heh. Yea right. I saw them blowing like you would expect to see a pine tree blowing in the wind. Man. I was amazed. Then my ID blew out of my hand with my cigarettes.

2 weeks later I was walking around outside the office and there is a pack of cigarettes laying there and it's mine. I know because my ID is with them. Heh. Funny. The winds must have carried them pretty far because the grass had already been mowed, clean up had already been done, and the typhoon had already been from Okinawa to the Philippines to Tokyo and back. Interesting. I wonder if the smokes were with it up in the air, or if they were just up there in a tree somewhere and blew in later. Who knows....
