Hurricane Charley  − 13 August, 2004

Florida was hit by four major storms in 2004.  The first, Charley, was an odd one, deadly yet compact.  On this day, Charley shot past us, just on the other side of Orlando.  The effect in Gainesville was minimal -- I remember going out that night, with the storm less than 100 miles away, and there was nothing, only a slight breeze.

Of course, in the places it had effect, the damage was major.  We were lucky this one time.  We wouldn't be lucky the next two times.
