what was your first mistake? − 1 June, 1999
In the pentecostal tabernacle across the street from my grandparent's old house, I married too young.
18 years old and a stark raving fool.
blinded by my want for a family.

I got married too young too. Much, much too young. You could say it was a product of wishful thinking and a prolonged panic attack. My first mistake? Not obeying my instincts. I knew she was trouble the first time I met her. The second time - same story. The third time I was impressed with her hubris - which ultimately led to my demise. I wanted so bad to believe she was a good person and my first and second impressions were simply prejudice. Woops!

BTW, the second time around has been great. Complete opposite end of the spectrum.

Mine also has to do with being in love (in retrospect, I was not in love - I was only wanting to get away from my mundane life for a while). I traveled 1000 miles away from my mom to meet a guy I met on the Internet when I was 18. My mom was scared to death, but let me go in her infinite faith that I would return home safely to her in time. It was only 6 months before I realized what a mistake I had made. I called her, begging for her forgiveness, and convinced her to fly me back home because I had no food, no money, no job...and the worst of it was that the guy I met up with had none of those things, either! Add to the mix his lack of motivation and I knew our future together was not going to be bright. Ironically, I met my current (and final) husband online just 6 months later and we have now been married 6 years! It's weird how things turn out sometimes.
