Introducing David August Abbott - he's a cute little fella − 14 May, 2007
Steph and I went in for our 17-week 3-day ultrasound yesterday. It was the first ultrasound since the first one which was just a blip of a heartbeat against blackness. Not much to look at, but it the beating of a little heart assured me that I had something like a paternal instinct. You could even say I got a little teary-eyed.
Today -- when the technician asked us if we wanted to know the sex of the baby, and we said very definitely, Yes -- I could hardly have guessed what level of excitement I would have for the answer. After all, it's a coin-flip. And Steph and I had prepared ourselves equally for both responses. I wanted both a boy and a girl. Steph felt the same.
I believe what the ultrasound technician said was "It's a boy. You see there?" pointing to a bright white splotch on the screen, "those are his boy parts."
Well if I had been holding Steph's hand tightly in anticipation before, I was holding it tighter now with utter excitement at the prospect of knowing. Immediately, I corrected the technician who immediately started talking about sports and other "manly" things our little one would one day do, I insisted we would have made an athlete out of our girl should that have been our fortune. Now, with a boy, little David August Abbott (to be) we are faced with the responsibility of ensuring he's as well-rounded and sensitive as his "boy parts."
We called the parents when we left the appointment. Everyone was happy to have the news. Happier still to see the cameraphone photos from the scene and the ultrasound scans here on Dandelife shortly thereafter.

I can't wait to have that experience in my life. It must be one of those moments of pure joy.

It's a really cool feeling. So far so good. Steph's been feeling him kicking like crazy this week. Apparently, movement stimulates growth. This dude's gonna be huge.
