Hannah  − 8 August, 1993

I met Hannah on August 8, 1993.

Young ones, let me give you some advice: never pursue anyone. When the time is right, when the person is right, you will know. Pursuit is futile.

Actually, let me rephrase that: you will generally know second, after the immediate bystanders. When Person A meets Person B and they have a "thing" going immediately, if there are any spectators, they usually start shooting each other glances and raised eyebrows. After A and B leave, they make comments like "Geez, how long until those two go out?"

Yes, there was immediate chemistry. The odd thing is, both of us had decided, at that point, that relationships were not for us. We'd independently decided to just be who we were, and forget everyone else. (From my standpoint, this was because of profound disappointment in the rest of the human species.)

And then I met Hannah -- and everything changed. Our first date was at O'Leno State Park, the very day that we met. We talked of amazing things -- the nature of being, the meaning of life, the problem of good and evil, materialism vs. the concept of the soul, and so on. I'd never met anyone who could hold their own against my rapid fire total recall topic barrage.

But Hannah was a deep thinker, too. She'd just returned to the U.S. from a 3 year tour of duty with the Peace Corps in Burundi. She was spectacular -- like a female Indiana Jones.

I could hardly wait to see her again. Fortunately, nature provided us a free lightshow (see next entry).
