getting ready for a big day  − 17 March, 2006

I received a call from Miriam today. Actually, this is one of my most fondest memories of Miriam. She was admitted to the hospital for a scheduled birth induction and had demanded that the hospital allow her to call me, since I couldn't be there to give her the support she wanted before she began this next step in her life. I was shocked. I mean, I know I'm her very best friend, but I hadn't expected her to be thinking about that at this moment.

So she called and told me how scared she was about becoming a mother. Not being a mom yet myself, I didn't really know what to say to make her feel better. The only thing I could come up with was to remind her that she had become a mother the moment she became pregnant, and that I couldn't imagine her not taking care of her child when he is outside of her belly any less than she had taken care of him while she was carrying him around in the inside. I told her that I knew she was going to be a wonderful, loving momma. With her heart and sense of motherly concern that she shows everyone, I told her that her baby was very, very lucky.

There were tears and prayers muttered over the next several minutes and finally she told me she had to go to sleep. She was scheduled for a busy day tomorrow! We said our good-byes and I love yous. I received a call two days later from her, letting me know that she was fine and so was the baby, but she had been forced into having a c-section because Christian had become stuck in the birth canal. Miriam was sore, but alive and loving her new little one, just like I knew she would.

I am now a proud aunt of 9 kiddos, counting her little boy and the other eight from my two sisters. I can't wait until God blesses James and I with a baby. After the last failed pregnancy, part of me is petrified to try again.

Love ya', Miriam. Christian Amani Avalos is one of the lucky ones!
