Being There − 11 June, 2007
I had a soccer game tonight. We won. It was a close game. I didn't score any goals. I didn't have any assists. But I felt like I was there with my passes. Good defense is important too. And knowing when to give it up and how to envision a play before it happens are just as important as goals and assists. It takes a lifetime of soccer-playing to enjoy the subtler aspects of the game. It takes something else to allow your team-mates to finish what you start.
I've been playing soccer for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest and fondest memories are of kicking a little round ball into a little netted rectangle. I'm 32 years old now and soon to be a father. Of all the things that I am happy I've learned in this life - enjoying the sport of Soccer is one of the things I hope I can share with my soon-to-be son, David. I would love to share many other things I've learned with him as well. But none bears the marks of pleasure as much as kicking the ball around with him. I doubt very much that I will be a high-pressure dad who wants his kid to be a world-class footballer, as it were. I just want to be able to pass the ball around with him, watch the world cup with him, coach his teams as he grows up playing and learning how to have fun with the world's most elegant sport. A tiny ball. 11 players. 90 minutes. No hands.
Perhaps one day David will be a better dancer than his old man. He may even have a wicked left. So long as I am there to enjoy it too, we'll both be happy. Maybe David will finish what I started. Maybe he will pass it on. Maybe we can just kick it around for a while and enjoy the moment within the moment. I will teach him how to play to have fun.
