Shenandoah National Park  − 10 June, 2007

Hannah and I were in Shepherdstown, WV for the weekend, headed for Baltimore the next day. It was a beautiful, clear day. In the mountains of West Virginia, I imagine it was a typical spring day. (For us, it was like a winter's day in Florida.)

We decided to go to Shenandoah National Park.

Now, no amount of words I write will ever capture the beauty of that place. Fortunately, I took pictures. I've Flickr'd them in below.

This, by the way, was the incident that blew my plans to sit in Baltimore and write music all week. Once I got started hiking, I didn't stop. I even bought my own digital camera later on (that's an upcoming story for another day, though). The ones you see here were taken with my wife's little Fujifilm A350.

Pictures hmh07 to hmh49 were scenes from Skyline Drive, the scenic driving route through the park. About a third of the way down, we decided to get out and hike a trail up to a rocky peak called Little Stony Man. You can see the spectacular views in photos hmh55a to hmh60.

Many of the places I visited are also part of the Appalachian Trail (hmh65).

You know, there's a story about one of these photos I probably can't get across. My wife and I have a lot of inside jokes, especially references to movies we've seen, or common experiences. In picture hmh59, you see her far down the trail of Little Stony Man. What's she doing there?

Fleeing the gnats.

See, she'd just put on some sort of herbal essence hair product that morning, and, well, many swarms of gnats thought she was a giant flower. She was pestered by them the entire trip. Whenever it happened, I'd act like one of the Magi from The Mummy and say, in an ominous voice, "The Minions of Toota-Moo* have found you."

Well, the joke was on me, because after I started sweating, the Minions of Toota-Moo found me next.

* Too long a story even for here!
