Father and Son Conversation  − 7 July, 2007

I'm on my way to Orlando right now flying southwest. I was the very last person to get on from Group C. So my seating choices were limited and I ended up sitting next to a father and his kid.

Since I woke up at 7:30 A.M. I was hoping to catch a little sleep on the way. That plan didn't work out so well because the conversation between the father and his kid next to me was too cute to not pay attention.

Here is my best attempt to recreate the conversation:

Kid(K)
Dad(D)

(The kid is about 5 with a high pitched rapid fire voice. The father is about 40 with a low slow voice)

K - Daddy? When are we going to take off?
D - Soon, but first we have to pull away from the gate.
K - Daddy? Why are we moving backwards? How can a plane fly backwards?
D - We are not flying yet, we are taxing to the runway.

(Security messages for the place are announced)

K - Daddy? Why do we need to worry about the masks falling down?
D - In case something happens.
K - Daddy? Why do you need to put your mask on first?
D - So I can help you put yours on.
K - Oh.
K - Daddy? I could probably do it myself.
D - I know, but just in case.

(Still taxing)

K - Daddy! Daddy! I think we are flying off the ground!
D - No not yet, we are still taxing to the runway.
K - Oh.
K - Daddy? What would happen if we fell off the runway?
D - Well it depends how bad it was.
K - Daddy? How about if I just fell to the ground? Would I die or just break a bone?
D - Depends how bad it was.
K - Oh.
K - Daddy? I would probably just break a bone.
D - Probably just a bruise.
K - Daddy? But don't worry I will put the mask on myself.

(Plane starting to take off)

K - Oh! OH! OHHHHHH!!!! We are taking off. Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!
D - Yes we are.
K - Bye airport! Bye plane! Bye Chicago! Bye house! Bye cat! Bye bike! Bye bed!

Ah, parenthood. Remind me of this story in a few years. My theory is that I won't enjoy conversations like this as a dad just because sometimes too many questions can get on your nerves. I'm hoping that I continue to have a sense of humor about these things and so many questions don't bother me at all. So I need you guys to keep me in check, OK?
