Mom's Problem  − 5 July, 2007

I'm an only child.  There aren't that many in my immediate family -- just me, Mom, Dad, and now Hannah, my wife.

On Thursday, I was actually in the middle of scanning in photos for my next set of Dandelife stories, about my wedding.  Hannah and I are about to hit our 12th anniversary, so I thought it was a good time to tell the story.

The phone rang, and it was my Mom.

Now, I knew this meant trouble.  Mom and I always talk on Sunday evening.  Like me, she always keeps busy, and will forget things if she doesn't put them on a regular schedule.  So when something appears off schedule, you know there's some circumstance pushing it there.

In this case, Mom had been having chest pains and shortness of breath.  Dad had been fussing at her to go to the doctor, but she'd been ignoring him.  (Something else we share -- we both hate going to the doctor.  Although this summer, it seems to be all I've done.)

We have another thing in common.  Mom and I will both hide the fact that we're ill and keep going.  After all, I had the problem for sleep apnea for years and didn't admit to it until the problem was solved.  Well, Mom had done the same thing -- the problem had been going on all week, but she kept it from me because she didn't want me to worry.  She didn't know the cause, so what was there to do?

Dad finally got her to go to the doctor and she was put on a blood thinner in case the problem was a clot.

That's as the situation stood on Thursday night.  We'd talk more tomorrow after she found out more information.

Now, as for me, I didn't take it too well.  See, the family history is not good.  Heart disease is prevalent, bypass surgery is common, and Mom's age is about the time it all starts.  I had a very bad feeling about this.

Over the next few days, I'll let you know how it all turned out.  I'm posting one story a day in this series; just hit the "Next Story" link at the top of the page and you'll find it (if it's been posted).

I hope everything goes well for you and your family ... I will keep your mom in my thoughts.

Thank you -- this was a pretty rough time.
