The Road to San Diego: Day 1 − 23 June, 2007
Charlotte, NC to Nashville, TN
Despite the best that Fate could throw against us, we completed the first leg of our transcontinental jaunt just after midnight CST. Certainly will be able to use the "extra" hour of sleep before meeting Randy and Barb for breakfast at Shoney's in the morning.
Earlier in the week, Wendy broke a tooth and had to schedule a root canal at the last minute to take care of the problem. Last night, I came down with an stomach virus that's been making the rounds and gave some serious thought to delaying the trip by one day. That would have certainly played havoc with our already tight schedule. With sufficient medication (better living through chemistry!) we were able to patch ourselves up enough to get out of town on time.
We arrived at the Charlotte airport to pick up the rental minivan around 5p. Taking stock of what we had managed to pack between the four of us, I had some concerns about the amount of available space in the new set of wheels. The van, a silver Chevrolet Uplander, does have a good bit of space, but it will definitely be put to the test on this journey. (How in blazes did we end up with so much stuff?!!). You'd think we were packing for the apocolypse.
The long ride was made somewhat easier by the various gadgets which comprised part of the "stuff". Jasa plugged in to her iPod and promptly tuned out. Wendy played an electronic version of Sudoku. Daniel alternated between the flipping the pages of Men's Fitness and sleeping. I managed to get the satellite radio working though the car stereo and filled the vehicle with the best (and decidedly worst) of what the last 30 years of music had to offer. At one point, Wendy and I started singing along with "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", as sung by that bastion of 60's and 70's country - Charlie Rich. Daniel took all he could of this caustic crooning, leaned forward and asked, "How old ARE you?" Well, ya can't please 'em all.
Tomorrow, we make out way to Little Rock and our first night of camping. THAT should be a hoot. Maybe Fate was giving us a little time to prepare for the hell to come :-)
