The Real World  − 16 May, 1987

The summer before entering the halls of academia at Gardner-Webb College, I read a few books designed to steer the prospective student towards success in undergraduate studies. One of the authors opined that the next four years would be the best of my life and that they would pass by so quickly.

We chafed at the rules imposed at the small Southern Baptist college (and frequently violated them), waiting for the day when we would be free to take our places in "The Real World". True enough, the years did sneak up on us.  On a sunny day in May 1987, we collected parchments attesting to our abilities to remain sober enough to complete a degree and set off to find our fortunes.
