Catching Up, Carrying On  − 23 February, 1996

(Pulled, warts and all, from a spiral-bound journal)

Well, here I go again...

Vomiting months worth of life onto the pages of single entry. What prompted my pen this evening? I received a call from Lisa. I hadn't heard from here since the marriage announcement almost two years ago. She led off with some bad news. Her sister, Amy, committed suicide last May. She had attempted it before, but this time she got her wish. Apparently, a manic / depressive disorder was the catalyst. Her condition did not respond to drugs.

I remember her from the Mars Hill days; especially the trip to Zephyrhills. I liked Amy. She was of a volatile nature, but fun-loving and kind. I just wish that she would have found something in this life to make her happy. She's not the first friend of mine to die by their own hands, but she was perhaps the closest.

Lisa is still recovering from it and said that if Cork hadn't been there she would have followed Amy's path. It really sounds as though she found her Mr. Right. I'm really happy for them.

She and I laughed about our foibles in college and caught each other up on life and loves. Cork is still working as a contract programmer, currently on assignment with Microshaft. She was strongly evasive about her present occupation. Typical. It amazes me how many similar paths our lives had taken; right down to spending Thanksgiving in San Francisco. They ate Chinese on that very day in Chinatown. Destiny is a strange companion.

I talked with Cork for a bit and then exchanged e-mail addresses. Now, if I can only get ahold of Carolyn Sun....
