Waking Up In A Rainforest  − 21 July, 2001

(Pulled, warts and all, from a spiral-bound journal)

I look around and I'm surrounded by trees.  Big ones!  I guess they are firs, but I can't be sure.  Chris and I hiked a little over two miles off the Olympic Hot Springs Road to get here.  So, apparently, did a lot of other folks.  There are at least 10 other tents in close proximity (within a couple of hundred yards) of our own.  That's not to say the place feels civilized - not at all.

With the exception of cleared-off areas and fire rings, you'd never guess this was a campsite.  About 1/4 mile from here are the hot springs; small, shallow pools of sulphurous smelling water.  Around 90-100 degrees, I'd guess.   Rocks have been placed around some of them to make the pools deeper.  Still, none are deeper than the knee.

We took the opportunity to sit in one yesterday after we arrived.  Quite refreshing.  Today, we'll try to make the middle coast of Oregon and camp on the beach.
