TCP/IP & Andrew Project  − 18 January, 1982

1982 -  Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP) are created.  This will be the first major step in the creation of the Internet as TCP/IP connects other networks to each other. (Nerds 2.0.1 Timeline)

The Andrew Project is the first adventure to form from Carnegie Mellon University and IBM's creation of the Information Technology Center.  Its major goal is to provide "computer aided instruction" with secure access to files both private and public files, lessons created for the computer with the use of author ware, and bulletin boards and electronic messaging to encourage group work (wikipedia).
