Nora  − 5 January, 2002

Today I'm stepping into the role of Phineas Bogg on the TV series Voyagers! and correcting some boo boos I made in the past. Looks like the red light on my Omni has brought me to this story about my dog, Neri.

Oops! I forgot to do the follow up story on her sister, Nora.

Well, Nora has her own webpage, too. My wife writes stories that she posts as "Neri". Nora's page, however, tells her origin story -- how she slipped her collar the night we brought her home, leading to a panicked search and a vast, coordinated rescue mission for our human friends.

Hannah says that Nora is clearly my dog. Nora is skittish, and a bit paranoid. Thanks, Hannah!

When we first got her, she hid out in her crate all the time; we eventually started calling it NORAD. She's MUCH better now, but still doesn't really like to go outside.

Nora has a keen sense of peril. (When she loses it, I always say, "You were supposed to be Scottish, not skittish!") In fact, a few nights ago, I came up with a TV series about her while we were on our walk. It could be on the history channel, and follow different versions of Nora as she played into historical events:

Episode #1 -- (an excerpt)

"Hey, get that dog back on board!"

"Too late, she's run off."

"Darn it. Poor thing, she'll never survive on the cold, cruel streets of New York City, alone."

"I know, it's a shame. She should be safe, with us, on board the Titanic, which, as you know, is totally unsinkable. Wow, poor dog!"

Episode #2 -- (an excerpt)

Ug is painting the side of his cave. Suddenly, Nora hears something, and runs outside. Ug steps out of the cave and sees Nora disappearing over the distant horizon.

"Ug say dog stupid." He throws the burnt stick he was drawing with to the ground. "Dog hear humans and run. Nora no need to fear humans. Us Neanderthals strong! Neanderthals here to stay!"

Episode #3 -- (an excerpt)

"Sir, I'm so sorry. We had a beautiful stray Collie for you, but she actually, somehow, cut her way out of a titanium reinforced dog kennel and escaped. If that poor little dog only knew -- she just missed being adopted by Michael Jackson!"

Oops! I failed to check page 41 on my Voyagers! Guidebook: the Titanic actually left from England, not NYC. Well, let's do a DC Comics type retcon here and say -- Nora teleported!!!

The first story is so totally Nora. Whenever the "pack" is out for a walk, I've noticed how she deftly maneuvers herself to the far side of the potential danger, putting the rest of us between her and it. I guess she's figured she doesn't have to be the fastest one of the pack, just faster than at least one of us.

That would be me!
