Finished the book  − 7 October, 2007

But don't light the fireworks yet.  This isn't exactly War and Peace.  It's not even a novel.

Today I finished writing the companion piece for my upcoming album, La vie sous la mer.  Each of the eight songs on the album tells a story.  In days past, I kept most of the meaning to myself.  Easy to do; my songs are instrumental.  Unless I say something, people are free to make their own interpretation.

But I must face it, I worked on this album a LONG time.  In some ways, I have lived in that other world since the day I first saw Kat's Mermaid.  As I said before, I didn't want it to vanish when the album was finished.

Finishing anything, for me, is an enormous milestone.

When I was younger, I wanted to be a writer.  Odd thing was, I would work out all these ideas, then never actually finish writing the novel or short story.  I've got an enormous notebook (well, honestly, five notebooks) full of old writing -- none of it finished.

I can remember Euryale, sister to Medusa, immortal and living in a world changed vastly from the mythological age she grew up in.  Just don't make her take off those sunglasses.

I can remember a star system with a beautiful, shining planet: Baraka, blanketed by a thick carbon dioxide atmosphere, covered in a world ocean that simmered at more than 250 degrees.  The humans came to colonize it, then realized the odd colored spots in the world ocean were actually the only other example of life to have been encountered anywhere other than Earth.  A small war broke out between the Land and Leave factions.

I can remember a world where magic became the basis for modern technology instead of science---where the family spends an evening watching plays broadcast through the crystal ball, where Dad flies off to work on his brand new carpet (he just loves that new carpet smell), and where the King of England has been dead for thousands of years . . . yet still rules.

None of them finished.

Honestly, I think the thing that put me over the edge was Dandelife.  I've polished my storytelling skills as I opened up the world of me and the groove.

Well, today the faltering has ended.

A few days ago, I posted a sort of sneak preview of the stories and settings on my Wordpress blog.  Have a look.  Before this month is over, you'll know the rest of the story.
