...And a Happy New Year? − 1 January, 2008
When I started playing guitar as an adult, I began with the blues. There is one thing I've been remembering, every day.
There are a lot of blues songs that start off with "Woke up this morning . . . "
Well, in a way, that's a given. If you hadn't woken up, you'd be dead, right?
Hah.
The transition back to the waking world is something we face every day. It's not always pleasant.
For the last three months, I've been sick. It started with a cold, in the first few days of October. By mid-month, it had escalated into an ear infection. From then on, it was a continuous cycle of illness, improvement, and relapse.
When the ship is sinking, you have to carefully consider what you throw into the lifeboat. In my case, the work day took a lot out of me. Having a sore throat and then speaking all day (teaching Science class) isn't a good way to recover. I would come home and try to resume a normal life, but I was slower.
I prioritized. In my time at home, the most important things are my family and my music. I focused on those two things, and pretty much abandoned the internet for a while
It happens. I had to do the same thing last year, while I finished recording my last album.
On the other hand -- if I never took time to focus on music, to spend all that time practicing . . . what exactly would I have to write about? Music is the central theme of my life.
Today, though, I finally woke up without a sore throat and a headache.
So if my life is music . . . maybe the song is finally changing back from the blues.

Hey, thanks Emily -- and worse, I was actually interrupted mid-story. I'll have to talk about the 6th grade space missions.
